Women going through cancer treatment have enough on their plate. But sadly, losing your hair during chemotherapy is extremely common. It can be one of the toughest parts of an already very difficult experience.

Cold capping is often helpful where available, but it's not always effective, and sometimes it depends on the particular drugs being administered. Most women will still lose at least some of their hair.

Wigs can disguise the hair loss, but they're restrictive, often uncomfortable, and because they often look unnatural or different to your own normal style, you are often left wondering if they are obvious to other people. Whether it's the reassuring weight of your hair on your shoulders, twirling strands between your fingers when you're nervous, or just being able to wash it in the bath after a difficult day, our hair provides comfort that wigs can't replicate.

In our Clifton studio, we manage and disguise hair loss for women going through chemo - working alongside your medical team. While the real work begins once your hair starts shedding, many of our clients come to us early so we can reassure them of what is likely to happen and how our techniques can help them to look as normal as possible as their treatment proceeds.

The type of transformations we can make to women's hair

Solutions while you go through treatment

Our Intralace Systems can be applied as soon as your hair starts to fall. Most clients will retain at least some of their hair so there is usually enough to attach to the lightweight mesh onto which additional hair is added. Since all our systems are tailored exactly to your specific needs they are adjusted to how much hair loss has occurred. In the rare occasions where all of your hair falls out, we can use the Intralace Freewear system where the mesh is attached to your head with medical grade tape. This is lighter and more breathable than conventional wigs. Both types of system allow your own hair to grow back normally when that becomes possible.

Once your chemotherapy is completed then your own hair can begin to grow back, but it will often be a different colour or texture to begin with, and most of our clients prefer to continue with their Intralace until their hair has resumed a more normal condition, thus avoided their friends and family seeing sudden changes in their apperance. Depending on how quickly it returns to normal thickness it can sometimes be appropriate to switch from the Intralace to Medi Connections - our ultra-fine extensions which can add volume and highlights as your hair gradually returns to normal.

Our studio is in Clifton, conveniently located for women receiving treatment across the region - including at the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre, Southmead Hospital (North Bristol), the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Weston General. The studio is easy to reach from central Bristol, by car or public transport, and we're always happy to plan your system around your medical appointments to reduce your travel.

Frequently asked questions

Will my hair grow back after chemotherapy?

For most people hair regrows once chemotherapy finishes, although it can take time and the texture or colour may be different at first. Our systems are designed so your own hair grows freely underneath, so you can wear one while you wait for it to return.

Can I have a system if I am using a cold cap (scalp cooling)?

Yes. Many women combine the two. We will work around your treatment and scalp cooling, and the timing can be planned alongside your oncology team.

When can I start?

It depends on your treatment and the condition of your scalp. We will talk it through gently at your free consultation and will never rush you.

Do you treat the hair loss medically?

No. We manage and disguise hair loss rather than treat it. We do not provide medical care for cancer or its side effects, but we work alongside your medical team so you can look and feel like yourself.
