The First Step

It can be very distressing to discover hair loss or excessive hair shedding. We understand that knowing where to go to get help or advice is problematic. There are many websites promising amazing results following the use of their products. Below is a guide to what you should do first.

GP Diagnosis

If you are experiencing what you believe to be more hair loss than usual then the first step is to visit your GP for investigation and diagnosis. Your GP may identify causes that can be treated. If appropriate your GP may refer you to a Consultant Dermatologist. Dermatology is the study of skin and this includes hair loss. You may feel that you would like further diagnosis from a Consultant Dermatologist or a registered Private Trichologist without your GP actually recommending this. In this case you may arrange this privately.

If you do wish to visit a private Consultant Dermatologist, with an interest in hair loss, please call or email us directly and we will try to recommend one in your area.

Consult a Dermatologist

Visiting an NHS Consultant Dermatologist is most likely to be the very best medical advice available. You may also visit a Consultant Dermatologist privately

Qualified medical professionals are governed by the General Medical Council “GMC” and are ethically bound to offer you the best advice and treatment available.

Visiting a Trichologist

There may be a lengthy waiting list to visit a NHS dermatologist free of charge. Therefore, it may be more appropriate to book a private appointment with a qualified trichologist.

Trichologists are professionals, specialising in all aspects of hair and scalp and assess the individual holistically.  Consultations are often 1 hour and during this process they give both a diagnosis and a prognosis. The Trichologist can then offer advice and treatments as appropriate. As with choosing any professional it is important to check their authenticity for the best outcome, therefore please see the following links.

If a Dermatologist or registered Trichologist informs you that your diagnosis will result in significant permanent hair loss or thinning with little chance of improvement you may want to consider other hair loss management options. These might include our Intralace System™, Medi Connections™, or Hair Replacement.
